Well put together museum - the "right scale" for a great collection of exhibits but not overwhelming. Really enjoyed the Rodin, porcelain, Dutch & Flemish, and Impressionist galleries. Well conceived progression of eras of art history, coupled with brief summaries of cultural, economic & political context, made understanding and interpreting the work in each exhibit hall easy.

Shout out to the special exhibit of commissioned work by Michelle Erickson ("Wild Porcelain"). When contrasted with the English pieces from which she drew her inspiration, her work blends in modern edginess and current-day relevance, which made for interesting viewing.

The architecture of the museum itself, not to mention the beautiful setting, add to the collection to make this an outstanding, iconic San Francisco landmark.

We used the "free 2st Saturday" for Bay Area residents and visited for free.

Highly recommend! Guo Pei exhibit is a must see. Everything is perfectly conserved and there’s a lot of attention to the layout of the museum.

Amazing views perfect for your special occasion photos like prom and wedding. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the entrance. The museum is worth the visit.

Went for the Guo Pei exhibit and it was wonderful! Even if you don't spring for the exhibit the curator placed individual pieces throughout the existing collections and that alone was very cool in seeing how they integrated these exquisite gowns into so many different styles/time periods. The gardens and dining area are also really pretty just be sure to get to them early because things close (the kitchen, then the drinks)1-2+ hours before the museum itself closes and it's such a wonderful area to relax and enjoy. Great vista for photos too as evident by the throngs of folks there to take prom and wedding photos 💓 worth the trip and I believe they still do joint memberships if you join the de young plus reciprocity to other museums

A very nice museum situated on stunningly beautiful grounds. Each time period is represented by a small number of works. The Rodin collection is very impressive and takes up several rooms. The entire museum can be seen in a couple of hours.

A must-visit for anyone who is an aficionado for central European art, particularly French.

First off, if you're a resident of the Bay, you have free admission on Saturdays, so if you're looking for a tasteful after-lunch activity, this is a wonderful choice. Parking directly in front of the museum is rather limited, but just go a bit further in and down a short hill to find more roadside parking.

If you happen to be an Impressionist or Monet fan, this is a must visit, as they house one of his water lilies works. They also feature side-exhibits that rotate depending on whatever the focus of the month is. At the time I visited, there was an exhibit featuring England's attempt at imitating porcelain.
